Police in 130mph border car chase

A police car chase reached speeds of over 130mph as officers pursued two vehicles which turned away from a checkpoint in County Fermanagh.

The fleeing drivers narrowly avoided other road users, some of whom were forced onto the road verges, before escaping over the border, police said.

The pursuit began shortly before 1100 GMT on Thursday when a black Honda Type R Civic and a Blue BMW turned away from a checkpoint in the Bellanaleck area.

Details have just been released.

Detectives have appealed for help to identity the occupants of the two cars which made off from a police patrol at Derrylin Road.

The vehicles sped through the village of Derrylin at speeds in excess of 90mph.

A police spokesperson said there was a lot of pedestrian traffic in the village at the time.

Both cars drove through flooded areas at high speed and escaped across the border into the Irish Republic at Aghalane.
